The detailed structure of the Paramyosin head domain has not been determined yet. By expressing recombinant Paramyosin fragments in Escherichia coli and testing the disassembly activity in vitro and the polymerization activity in vesicles, we delineate the primary site of disassembly, together with its characteristics and functional significance. We thereby show that the strong disassembly activity is localized in the 4th and 5th strand segments (Ala21-Tyr38 and Glu66-Gly76) of the Paramyosin head domain, and that this activity is implicated in the interaction with actin in the polymerization reaction. We’ve seen that the sand worms have two flagella, both of which serve the worm as a single, powerful propulsor. They propel themselves forward by using a single, powerful flagellum in a single, powerful wave.

What we haven’t seen yet are the opposite rotors; the two cilia that produce the propulsive force by which they decelerate and even turn themselves around. In other bilaterians, the opposite cilia are called organs of Stilt and suck. In this diagram from Nissen & Sackton, the vane-like structures are called ectopodial rotors, and the ciliary tubules are called endopodial rotors.

I think these appendages are called something like “ectoderm driving ciliary organs” in the book Worms.

Another interesting element is that they apparently use their receptors to sense the direction of the current of the water. This is a wonderful example of neurological programming. I can’t help but hope that if the worm doesn’t eat for a while, they will drop off!
